Cold sleep as refuge
Dan notices an advertisement from Mutual Assurance Company and reconsiders a technology he had previously dismissed. Heartbreak makes the Long Sleep appealing not as retirement or investment but as separation from Belle and Miles.
Terms and calculations
He negotiates custodial care, investments, and the disposition of his assets if he dies. He also arranges cold sleep for Pete, treating the cat's care as a binding responsibility rather than an optional extra.
A Brief Reversal

A Brief Reversal
A sober reassessment
After the medical examination, Dan follows the doctor's warning and spends a night eating and resting instead of drinking. He realizes that he has been using alcohol and the proposed sleep to avoid a conflict he has not tried to resolve.
War postponed
Dan decides to visit Miles before committing himself to the sanctuary. The change of mind is real, but it lasts only until Belle and Miles seize control of his choices.
Drugged into Agreement

Drugged into Agreement
The confrontation turns
Dan accuses Belle and Miles of falsifying documents and demands the return of the shares he gave Belle. Belle injects him with Zombie drug, leaving him able to hear and answer but unable to think independently.
An imposed instruction
Belle directs the drugged Dan to take cold sleep and to regard her and Miles as trusted family. His earlier consent is converted into a tool for the people who have already taken his company and are now trying to prevent legal resistance.

The Papers Rewritten
A different insurer
Belle examines Dan's documents and alters the company name from Mutual Assurance Company to Master Insurance Company of California. She uses institutional connections and a typewriter to make the substituted paperwork seem sufficient for the sanctuary's procedures.
The stock disappears from reach
Belle learns that Dan mailed his stock assignment to Bank of America. Unable to retrieve it before the mail moves, she abandons that immediate plan and instead prepares to send Dan into cold sleep before the medical review can expose his condition.
A Hollow Promise

A Hollow Promise
The investment vanishes
Dan learns that Master Insurance Company went bankrupt after the collapse of the Mannix Group and that his portfolio no longer exists. His carefully chosen investments cannot provide the fresh start he had imagined.
Custody survives
The sanctuary's separate custodial contract has been funded in advance, so Dan wakes alive even though his estate has failed. The distinction between safe physical custody and unsafe financial management becomes the material cost of the betrayal.
